In order for the Dutchtown Lady Bulldogs to be a factor in subregion 4A-AAAA and beyond, junior Janessa Murphy knows she will have to put the ball in the basket.

“I try to not only score but distribute to my teammates but I realize there is going to be a time where I have to score for my team so I do that,” Murphy said.

“She sees the vision and wants to be able to take the team where we want to go,” Dutchtown girls’ coach April Tate said. “She doesn’t mind putting the team on her shoulders and taking us there.”

On Nov. 27 against Southwest Atlanta Christian, Murphy displayed this ability in spite of foul trouble, netting 10 of her 17 points in the second half of the team’s only defeat at press time.

“As soon as she came off the bench, it was instant offense and that is what she brings to the team,” Tate said.

Hoping to play Division-I basketball, Murphy knows schools are noticing her play but doesn’t dwell on it much.

“I will get letters and my dad will tell me about it but we really won’t talk about it so I can keep focused,” said Murphy, who also has a 3.5 grade-point average.

“She is an overall great kid,” Tate said. “Her teachers and teammates love her.”
