Kandace Thompson came up with two of the most important goals for Pace on its march to the Class A girls’ soccer championship.

The senior defender scored on a header with 12:30 remaining in the second half of the title game against First Presbyterian Day May 17 to tie it at 2-all and force overtime, with the Knights going on to win 3-2 (4-3 on penalty kicks).

Thompson performed similar heroics in Pace’s 4-3 overtime win over Holy Innocents’ in the quarterfinals May 10 as she provided the tying score in the second half that forced the game into extra periods.

“Two times, Kandace Thompson was the one who came through at the end when we were down and we had to have a goal,” Pace coach Liz Tutt said.

Thompson has been a mainstay in the Pace starting lineup as a defender since her freshman season.

“She’s smart and she’s a quiet leader on the field,” Tutt said. “She definitely shows her leadership by using her voice. You can’t get her down too long. If she gets knocked down, she’s up before she can think of what’s next. She keeps on going and she’s resilient. She just keeps at it and has a never-say-die attitude, which lifts everybody up and in those two games in the playoffs, for her to score those goals is just magic.”
