As Westminster seeks to win a second consecutive state girls swimming championship, it will rely on another strong contribution from Maddie Downs.

The junior swimmer showed she is up to the task with a solid showing at the McCallie Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 17.

Downs was part of the Westminster girls’ quartet of Katie Christy, Jamie Christy and Nicole Stafford that won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 37.94 seconds. She also teamed up with Stafford, Lilly Nunnally and Erika Redding to place second in the 200 free relay at 1:42.31.

Downs also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.22) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.45) to help Westminster win both the overall and girls team championships.

She won three of her four events in the Wildcats’ season-opening dual meet against Mill Creek, helping the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to victory as well as winning the 100 breaststroke (1:02.74). She also finished second in the 100 freestyle (55.95).

“Maddie is always working hard to get better,” Westminster coach Pete Higgins said. “She has a great work ethic and she gives us good leadership.”
