Maggie Cushing has been a key part of the last two state championship teams for the four-time defending lower classification state champion Westminster girls’ lacrosse squad.

The senior defender will be playing an even bigger role as a veteran leader on a younger and less experienced Wildcat unit in 2014.

Cushing anchors a Westminster defense that has held its opponents to just seven goals in the Wildcats’ first two games of the season.

“She’s really great at communication,” Westminster coach Jay Watts said. “She’s good at getting in the right spot and is good at getting other people in the right spot on the defensive end. She’s super aggressive — at times, she’s just sacrificed her body. Stopping an attacker or stopping a shot, she certainly sacrifices for the team in many ways.”

Cushing also contributes artistically at Westminster as a member of the school choir, the Ensemble, as well as an actress in school plays.

“She’s a rare case here, where she excels in sports and excels in the arts as well and she balances the demands of both of those very well,” Watts said.
