For three seasons, Nia Star felt the team had a better chance of success if she setup others to score. But this season, the senior midfielder decided she had the ability if the opportunity presented itself.

“I’ve built my confidence up as far as taking shots because usually I pass the ball along to one of my teammates who I know is better at taking the shot,” Star said.

On Feb. 21 against New Manchester, Star’s new way of thinking paid off when she recorded the first goal of her career in a 5-3 victory.

“The entire team was trying to congratulate her and she ran from everybody, jumping up and down and saying ‘I scored a goal,’” Westlake soccer coach Tiffani Smith said.

Since then and partly due to Star’s improved defense, the Lady Lions have won their last four games and will be heading to the playoffs for the third season in a row.

“Nia is one of those players who does everything,” Smith said. “She never complains. She hustles and some way, some how you wonder how she actually gets to certain balls but she gets to them.”

Star also has a 3.9 GPA and plans to major in business and international relations in college.
