The future of tennis is bright at Arabia Mountain with Taylor Champion on the court.

Before the Lady Rams’ playoff exit, the freshman earned a 10-0 record in singles’ competition.

“She is committed to one sport and I think that is hard to come by with a ninth grader, Arabia Mountain tennis coach Robin Wesley said. “It’s her focus. She comes to play and I think that is a unique situation for a freshman. She’s a leader on the team.”

“I just play my game and do what I’ve been taught,” Champion said. “Put in everything that I have, follow through and basically do what my coach has taught me to do and think.”

Unfortunately, the Lady Rams’ season ended against Flowery Branch with a 5-0 setback last week.

“She got nervous playing in the state matches and that is pretty normal but hopefully that is behind her,” Wesley said. “She’s got the confidence but she will have the experience also.”

“It was fun,” Champion said. “Next year, we will do better and I’m looking forward to it.”

Next season, Ryan plans to move Champion from the No. 2 singles spot to No. 1.

“I will still have the same mindset to go out there and play my game,” said Champion, who plays three days a week at Dave Matthews Tennis Academy. “Nothing different.”
