“I’m not a real loud coach but the girls would probably say that was about as loud as I’ve ever been and I was spitting mad if there is such a thing,” Gammage said. “We weren’t playing team basketball. This time of the year you ought to be playing team basketball instead of thinking about yourself.”
As a result, Hickey netted eight of her 17 points in the third quarter as Union Grove separated itself from Eagle’s Landing on the way to a 47-41 victory in the opening round of the Union Grove Holiday Tournament.
“If that is what we need to do to get a spark under us I’m all for it,” Hickey said. “Coaches have different ways of getting their players motivated and that way worked for us tonight. He normally doesn’t do that but if it helped us get the win, we will take the win.”
Hickey also grabbed 11 rebounds, made five steals and blocked two shots.
“I was just working to help my team win,” Hickey said. “Whatever they need me to do I go out there and do it.”
“She is one of those leaders,” Gammage said. “She works hard night in and night out.”
