The 2013-14 basketball season is just weeks away from starting which means junior wing player Tynice Martin will be back on the court to help the Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers defend their Class AAAAA title.

“She has been leading us since her freshman year,” Southwest DeKalb girls’ coach Kathy Walton said. “I really don’t expect that to change. She will be challenged though. We got some good young people who are going to challenge her. The main thing is to do what she normally does and show some leadership.”

“Coach Walton wants me to be a leader,” said Martin during Media Day at Tucker High last Thursday. “She wants to be able to trust me as much as she did last year. She wants me to step up my game and to carry the team.”

Last season, Martin averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds, and was named Second Team All-State in Class AAAAA but her focus is to become an all-around player and not worry about the individual accolades.

“We just talk about getting better every year,” Walton said. “[Awards are] something other people are going to decide. The main thing is to just focus on what she needs to do.”

Martin, who is ranked in the top 40 in the nation, said her options are still open as far as where she will attend college.
