A sprint champion as a junior in South Carolina. Likewise in Georgia as a senior. Therefore, Westlake’s SheKara Martin as the South Metro Female Athlete of the Year was not a very difficult decision.

To cap her prep career in track and field, Martin won gold in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and led the 4-by-100 track team to a first-place finish in Class AAAAAA. Martin also set a state meet record in the 200 with a time of 23.58 seconds and helped the relay team post the fastest time in the nation of 45.74 seconds.

“SheKara is a great athlete,” Westlake track coach Jason Cage said. “She’s real competitive. She motivates the team and puts the team on her back. She just takes the lead.”

The Lady Lions also won the first Class AAAAAA state championship.

Martin will have at least one more chance to do something special with her Westlake teammates at the 54th annual Golden West Invitational at California-Berkeley this weekend before she begins competing for Auburn University as a freshman.

“The SEC is really loaded,” Cage said. “I know that SheKara can compete with those girls and I believe she will make some noise in the SEC.”
