College Park-based Woodward Academy announced fourth-grader Vishal Sareddy won first place at the Geography Bee National Finals competition recently at Duke University, conducted by the North South Foundation.

Vishal attends the Woodward North campus in Johns Creek.

Educational contests organized by the foundation are designed to encourage academic excellence among Indian-American children.

The contests are conducted every year in two steps.

First, children participate in regional contests held at various locations throughout the country.

Participants with high scores advance to the national finals. The first, second and third place winners from a given contest are awarded scholarships of $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively, redeemable in the winners’ freshman year of college.
