Friday Market, featuring local vendors selling fresh goods, will be each Friday from 9 a.m. to noon through Sept. 30.
For the past two years, the market has been held at 2 West Main, otherwise known as the Wilson House — a grassy area shrouded by trees.
Main Street Director Candy Franklin said the Friday Market is appreciated by residents because it provides accessible, affordable items.
“I do believe that customers are looking for unique items and high quality and I realize that these items might be more expensive,” said Franklin. “Much of the produce that shows up here is picked the afternoon before or the morning of the market. It is difficult to get that freshness in the local grocery store.”
Aside from produce, other wares sold include jams, jellies, baked goods, women’s accessories, aprons, birdhouses, soap and artwork. The prices varies depending on the vendor but jams and jellies, for example, run anywhere from $3 to $10 for a pint jar.
Franklin said she has also received requests for Avon and Pampered Chef representatives to host their own booths.
There is no fee for a vendor to set up a space to sell their items, which Franklin said she thinks brings a unique draw.
The first Friday Market of the year took place on June 1, with seven vendors and 89 attendees.
This attendance level was a jump from last year’s opening day, which yielded 51 residents.
For this year, Franklin hopes that 10 percent of Hampton’s total population of 7,000 will be present.
“The more local residents that attend our market, the better it will become,” said Franklin. “It is a time for community interaction —to sit, chat and relax for a little while.”
