The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K-9 Deputy Marco Henry, 6. Marco was a Belgium Malinois who died Wednesday morning. A veterinarian discovered Marco developed inoperable cancer and he was euthanized. Earlier this week, Marco had been working as a highly trained all-patrol canine assigned to Sgt. Corey Henry, the commander of the office’s K-9 unit, pictured with Marco. Marco had not exhibited any signs of being ill prior to Wednesday morning. He was a beloved member of Henry’s family with whom he lived.

Henry and Marco had been partners for more than five years. Marco, acquired from Germany, trained as an all-patrol dog, which means he could detect the presence of illegal drugs, search for suspects and track.

Henry and Marco received the prestigious 300 Club Award for outstanding service in 2013. The Buckhead Business Association recognized the team for exemplary performance in the support of public safety in 2010. Various law enforcement agencies and organizations have commended Henry and Marco for their work. Recently, the team made a presentation to members of the Cliftondale Community Association in south Fulton County. Henry would also take Marco to Fulton County Schools to educate youth about the K-9 Unit.

There will be a photo gallery on the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, www.facebook.com/fultonsheriff and the public will be able to share condolences on the page.

This is the first time the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has had an all-patrol dog. The office has two other K-9’s that were trained by the U.S. Marine Corps for explosives ordnance disposal and they are part of the office’s bomb unit.
