A fundraiser to benefit the documentary chronicling the life of veteran actress Ruby Dee is set for Sunday at West & Mill Bistro, 1000 Marietta St. in northwest Atlanta.

Organizers say proceeds from the event, scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will be used to finish the film project, “Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee.”

“I’ve been excited about the documentary since first consulting with the filmmakers in 2010,” said fundraiser organizer Lorna Wilson. “For the past two years they have been working diligently to fund and create this historical documentary on Ruby Dee and [late husband/actor] Ossie Davis and their independent approach to maintain control and integrity of the film is something to be admired.”

The aforementioned 90-minute film is in its final stages of post production. The couple’s grandson, filmmaker Muta Ali, is featured prominently in the project.

Ali interviews his grandparents’ famous friends, including entertainer/activist Harry Belafonte and actors Danny Glover, Alan Alda and Sidney Poitier.

Their stories take him back into time — to fighting for justice in Harlem and the Deep South, fighting for equality and against McCarthyism on the stages of Broadway, fighting for justice in Hollywood, fighting to keep their family and young children together while traveling the world as actors and activists and fighting to support civil rights leaders like Paul Robeson, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

The project needs additional funding for completion and exhibition, Wilson said.

“I am asking Atlanta to join me in support of this very important film, which is sure to be a rich addition to African-American history,” Wilson said.

The reception will include light fare, with drinks specials by Destiny Wine and West & Mill Bistro. A trailer of the film will be shown and “reflections” shared on Dee and her late husband.

The suggested donation for Sunday’s event is $60, but all contributions are welcome.
