Funeral services for former state Sen. Nathan Dean, 79, of Rockmart, who died Saturday, are set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rockmart. Dallas Mayor Boyd Austin, former governors Joe Frank Harris, Roy Barnes and Sonny Perdue, and the Rev. John Hooper will officiate.

Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with Greg Thompson officiating and the West Georgia Masonic Memorial Club in charge of Masonic graveside rites.

The family will receive friends in the First Baptist Church Great Room on Monday, June 10, between 5 and 9 p.m.

According to an obituary posted on the Freeman Harris Funeral Home web site, Dean served 12 years as a Georgia House of Representatives member before his election to the Georgia State Senate in 1974, where he served for 30 years until his retirement in 2004.

“During his time in the Georgia Legislature he was known as a hardworking and effective member,” the obituary stated.

“Nathan loved the people of Georgia and the 31st Senatorial District and worked tirelessly to make northwest Georgia a better place. He is quoted as saying, ‘I was born to serve people and shake hands.’”

He also served as a member of the board of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs from 2004 to 2010.

Dean was a native of Rockmart and son of the late Tom and Ellen Brooke Dean. He was the youngest of seven children.

He was a 1952 graduate of Rockmart High School, attended what is now Shorter University and was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ann Carpenter Dean of Rockmart; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Durand Dean and Scot and Keri Dean all of Rockmart; three grandchildren, Steven, Ana Scott and Mason; one brother, four sisters, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

He will lie in state from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour.

Phillip Eidson, Amos Sparks, Mickey Spinks, Steven Dean, Chip Howell and Danny Owens will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rockmart High School Class of 1952 and state and local elected officials.

Freeman Harris Funeral Home in Rockmart is in charge of arrangements.
