The Girl Scout Cookie Program kicked off Jan. 1 and will continue through March 17. The program is designed to teach girls business and leadership skills as well as responsibility and financial literacy.
Sandy Springs Girl Scout Samantha Boaz-Duncan, 8, of Troop 12575 based at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, said sharing is one of the most important lessons she has learned selling cookies. In addition to asking clients if they would like to buy cookies for themselves, she also asks them if they would like to buy a box to donate to soldiers overseas through Girl Scouts’ Smiles4Military project.
“That was one of the things that we really focused on last year — trying to get a lot of boxes over to the troops,” said Bobbie Boaz, Samantha’s mother. “This is one of the things that reminds them of being at home — Girl Scout cookies.”
Nekeidra Taylor, a spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, said Samantha was one of the top sellers in the Sandy Springs service unit last year.
“She sold 1,300 [boxes],” Taylor said.
Boaz said, “We were everywhere all the time selling cookies. … We sold more than her entire group combined.”
Samantha, a student at The Schenck School in Sandy Springs, said she wants to sell even more this year.
Boaz said though this is her daughter’s third or fourth year in Girl Scouts, last year was her first year selling the cookies.
“My mom took a picture of me in my vest and [with] the cookie form in my hand, and she sent it to all our friends and family and then we went to these businesses asking for donations for cookies and then we just started taking people’s orders,” Samantha said.
Boaz described her daughter as very animated and brave. Samantha said she enjoys selling cookies.
“We get to earn patches and do activities, and then when it comes the time to sell [the cookies], it’s just really fun,” she said.
Her favorite cookie is Tagalongs.
