The 2012-13 girls’ basketball landscape in Henry has as many twists and turns as that of their male counterparts.

From the underdog teams to the perennial contenders, there is no shortage of storylines to keep both casual and die-hard fans hanging on until the end of the season.

 Union Grove

It’s hard trying to figure out what to make of the Lady Wolverines (5-6) this season.

Union Grove suffered significantly decisive losses to Starr’s Mill and McIntosh before bouncing back to dispatch the likes of Pike County, Creekside and Northgate.

Trying to carve out their place in a competitive Region 4-AAAAA will be quite the challenge. With talented junior forward Treva Hickey leading the way and help from an improving supporting cast, though, things just might pan out.

Projection: Look for the Lady Wolverines to make a serious push for the playoffs come region tournament time.

 Woodland

The Wolfpack (12-1) are sitting pretty these days.

It’s no secret that the regularity of solid production from dynamic swingwoman Morgan Jones is up there with death and taxes. The continued ascent of fellow seniors, guard Lindsey Reed and center Nicole Findura, have given Woodland a triumvirate that few opposing teams have an answer for.

Projection: Deep playoff run ending — happy ending or no — in the GHSA Class 4-A title game.

 Locust Grove

The youthful Lady Wildcats headed into the holidays seven games under .500, a stat which can be somewhat misleading given the fact that the team has failed to close out several winnable games.

Leading scorer Sabiyah Broderick is the only senior in the team’s first unit. The swing guard got off to a blazing start, averaging a double-double through the first six games.

Diminutive point guard Taniya Juarez is evolving into a formidable sparkplug for the Lady Wildcats. According to coach Greg Shook, wing Alley Fegenbush has been a stabilizing “workhorse” while fellow junior Temia Juarez (sister to Taniya) has been steady at shooting guard.

Projection: Look for Locust Grove to take a few major steps forward this season — to balance out the youthful inconsistency.
