“We really wanted to find a creative, fun event where anybody in the community is welcome and encouraged to come,” said Jen Freyer, president of the Barnwell Foundation.
The Wizards travel across the country to help raise money for schools and nonprofits, performing basketball tricks, crazy dunks and other antics similar to the Harlem Globetrotters. About 20 to 25 local players will make up the home team, Freyer said, including Barnwell Elementary Principal Norman Sauce, Vice Principal David Vode and Johns Creek High School varsity basketball coach Pete Goggin.
The doors open at 5 p.m. with pre-game activities, music, concessions and an opportunity to buy Harlem Wizards’ gear.
“There will be a halftime party on the gym floor with the Wizards, and the Wizards stay for autographs afterwards,” Freyer said.
The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. Though this is the first year for the fundraiser, she hopes the event becomes an annual affair.
The proceeds raised will supplement the Barnwell Parent Teacher Association’s fundraising efforts to fulfill needs and wants at the school.
“Currently at Barnwell, the PTA … does the majority of the fundraising for the school,” Freyer said. “The foundation’s strategy is to supplement those activities by having family/community events that in itself will make a profit without making it seem like yet another fundraiser that we’re hitting up the same parents [and] the same businesses for on top of what they already help do at the school through the PTA.”
Repaving the running track, expanding the curriculum to include studies in a second language, and creating a center for science, technology, engineering and math are three funding goals the principal has identified, she said.
