At Hembree Springs Elementary, however, Summer Camp is under way! With a grant, jointly written by the YMCA and Principal, Kali Raju, from Hembree Springs, thirty incoming first graders have had the time of their lives. Starting with an 8 am bus ride, students attend camp 5 days per week from 8-1 each day. The program’s goals are to help students prevent the learning loss that typically happens during the summer months with a focus on literacy, language development and math as well as starting children on a path of healthy living for a lifetime with a guided physical activity program each day.
Taught by two outstanding first grade teachers from Hembree, Ms. Haublein and Ms. Forte, and assisted by two YMCA employees Matthew Robertson and Daniel Zimmer, all students have received active instruction throughout the day. They have participated in fun learning activities of Reading, Writing, Math and have been energized through a guided Physical Activity period of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training delivered through the YMCA’s Youth Fit for Life Program.
While pre and post- assessments have provided the data to show how students are progressing, the staff has seen growth every day. Students have shown increases in skill levels and improved stamina for recreation activities. The most ‘telling’ signs, however, have been the big smiles seen each day when students arrive. They bounded down the bus steps and out of their cars, eager to get to their Hembree Camp!
