With a score of 100.3, Hembree Springs Elementary School in Roswell is Fulton County School System’s highest performing school as measured by the state’s new College and Career Ready Performance Index.

“We are very proud of our accomplishment,” said Principal Kalpana Raju.

To ensure high achievement at Hembree Springs, Raju said she makes it a point to hire very strong teachers who are not afraid to take risks and are willing to adapt to changes within the education field. The school also uses multiple assessment tools to monitor student progress throughout the year, she added.

The Georgia Department of Education rolled out the results last week of its new “easy-to-understand” index, which replaces the No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress system. The U.S. Department of Education granted the state’s waiver from the No Child Left Behind accountability system last year.

“Because CCRPI covers multiple metrics, this isn’t just a pass/fail system [as with AYP],” Fulton County Superintendent Robert Avossa said in a statement. “CCPRI shows student progress over time and gives us a better understanding of how our schools are really doing.”

The new performance index measured schools and school districts on a 100-point scale, giving points in three major areas: achievement, progress and achievement gap. Some schools also received extra points — up to 10 — for having a significant number of economically disadvantaged students, English learner students and students with disabilities meeting expectations. Additional points could also be earned for challenging students to exceed expectations and participate in college and career readiness programs.

Hembree Springs Elementary was the only school in the district — and among less than 20 statewide — to receive a score above 100. Crabapple Crossing Elementary School in Milton and Findley Oaks Elementary School in Johns Creek nearly met the 100-point mark, both earning scores of 99.2.

Only three out of all the public schools in North Fulton — Mimosa Elementary School and Esther Jackson Elementary School, both in Roswell, and Independence High School in Alpharetta — received scores lower than the average across the entire school system for their grade level.
