She may be behind her sister on the depth chart, but that has not kept Krystal Bowen from working hard.

Bowen, a Woodland senior, is the girls’ tennis team’s No. 2 singles player behind her twin sister, Kimberly Bowen.

Woodland head coach Ashley Maddox said Krystal has always been striving for that No. 1 spot.

“It can be tough for some players to approach having a sibling ahead of them, but Krystal has done well with it,” Maddox said. “It is a good sibling rivalry they have going. Krystal has always tried to prove she belongs on the same level as her sister. She has succeeded.”

Both Bowen sisters will play tennis for Tuskegee (Ala.) University next season.

“The coaches there recognized they are both on the same level,” Maddox said.

Maddox said Krystal (11-3) improved dramatically from her junior season to her senior season.

“She added strategic power to her game,” he said. “She learned how to keep the ball in the court and then go for the kill shot. Her power really improved from her junior to her senior year.”

Maddox said the first time he saw the twins, he knew they could be something special for Woodland.

“I had heard about them before I took over as head coach last year and I wanted to see what the hype was about,” Maddox said.
