Based on the Broadway hit written by Heather Hach with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and inspired by the movie version of Amanda Brown’s original novel, the musical tells the story of aspiring attorney Elle Woods and her struggle to prove that blondes can have more fun and be at the top of the class.
The musical will run April 10 to 13 at the Henry County Performing Arts Center.
Director Renee Yawn and actress Whitney Van Matre, who will portray Woods, said they expect the audience to enjoy its comedy.
“People who come to the show can expect a lot of laughs because from a cast perspective, we laugh a lot,” said Van Matre. “It’s really visually appealing with lots of dancing and on-stage chemistry, which really helps tell the story of ‘Legally Blonde.’”
Although audience members can expect to see some of the favorite characters from the Broadway show and film, Yawn said there are aspects that make the Players’ performance unique.
“I’m never one to put a carbon copy of a show on stage, I always like to put little spins on it, so the set’s a little different and our costumes will be really creative,” she said.
Van Matre agreed, saying “people who have seen the show before can expect a little bit of a different twist because we’ve been able to make our characters come to life in a way that we interpret them, which has been a lot of fun.”
The cast has been rehearsing since early January and Yawn and Van Matre said they are excited to present the finished product.
“I’ve learned that this show is not for the amateur dancer, actor or singer and it has really required all of us to stretch and push ourselves,” Van Matre said. “I’m most excited to see it all come together because we’re coming with our A game and giving everything we have as actors.”
The show has been rated PG-13 for some adult language and situations.
