Heritage Sandy Springs Monday announced a new three-part children’s gardening program offered free to the general public. Little Diggers is a family gardening series presented by Heritage that introduces children and parents to the world of horticulture and gardening.

Little Diggers will be held monthly over three Saturdays in April through June. Led by garden educators from the north Fulton master gardeners, in each of the free workshops, children 6 to 10 and accompanying adults will learn about simple gardening techniques, basic horticulture and the science behind plants. Introducing gardening to children not only teaches responsibility, but also encourages healthy eating and a better understanding of where food comes from. The program is offered free through a grant from the city of Sandy Springs.

The schedule is as follows:

o Little Diggers: Lettuce Garden, April 5 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Garden Room, 6075 Sandy Springs Circle. The program will introduce kids to the experience of growing nutritious food from seed to harvest. Each family will plant a lettuce garden to take home. Watch it grow and enjoy the harvest.

o Little Diggers: Wildflower Seed Balls, May 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Heritage, 6110 Bluestone Road. Learn all about native plants and how they help provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Then make a messy, dirty seed ball to take home and plant.

o Little Diggers: Pizza Garden, June 7 from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Heritage Sandy Springs Farmers Market, lower level of Parkside shopping center, 5920 Roswell Road. So many ingredients go into making a pizza: basil, tomatoes, and oregano are just some you can plant and grow at home. Meet farmers who grow the food we eat and then make your own pizza garden to take home to water, care for and enjoy.
