The concert begins at 4:30 p.m. at Heritage Hall, 6110 Blue Stone Road. Kaleidoscope is a 31-voice ensemble drawn from the full O’Neal Singers’ chorus.
Performing a diverse, constantly changing repertoire, it is known for its polished presentation of choral selections ranging from Gregorian chant to 20th-century compositions, from opera to a capella vocal jazz and from classical masterworks to African-American spirituals.
“Composers and poets have always been drawn to the seasons of the year for inspiration,” Michael O’Neal said. “Not only do the seasons portray the journey of life in nature, but also draw obvious parallels in the human journey.
“Our program will include standards such as ‘All the Things You Are,’ which brings to mind spring and young love; Summertime, pointing out the joy of life in our young maturity, and ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘September Song’ in which we recall the experiences of youth. The concert will conclude with a medley from one of the most beloved and influential musicals of all time, ‘Les Misérables.’ The story, by Victor Hugo, is a dramatic accounting of the seasons in one man’s life, Jean Valjean.”
Since its inception in 1989, the Singers organization has established itself as one of the premier symphonic choruses in the Southeastern U.S. It offers a variety of choral programming including sacred and secular music.
Heritage Executive Director Carol Thompson said the winter concert series was started to fill a void in the music scene. It started in November with the Midtown Brass Quintet and continued with performances by Joe Gransden’s Holiday Show with special guest Francine Reed in December and the Franklin Pond Quartet last month.
“With many of our members requesting classical, jazz and other genres, we decided to put together a classical series that would appeal to a broad range of tastes,” Thompson said.
