The total grant money set aside from the 2012 budget was $30,000. Johns Creek Chief of Staff Patty Hansen said three arts organizations applied for grants. One application did not meet the document requirements and another was withdrawn by the applicant.
“We felt that [Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra] did a very good job in coming within the boundaries of community outreach, letting the citizens know what is available to them which was, of course, the most important piece of this grant’s program,” Hansen said.
The grant money will go toward the orchestra’s Meet the Orchestra program coming up Oct. 4 at Wilson Creek Elementary School. The program will give students the opportunity to learn how the different instruments in the orchestra work together.
Hansen said last year the full amount of available grant money was awarded. She said the grants committee is exploring options to get the word out so more Johns Creek arts-centered 501(c) 3s would be able to apply.
Monday night’s meeting was the last regular council meeting of the fiscal year, and the remaining grant money that was not awarded this year will most likely be presented as part of the final budget sounding in the reserve fund.
Council voted unanimously to award the grant. Post 4 Councilman Ivan Figueroa removed himself from the discussion and the vote because he recently served on the board for the applicant.
