“It feels good. I’ve worked really hard to get here,” Solheim said of the anticipation leading up to the release of her first book “Game On,” which comes out Tuesday.
Solheim started writing the story about the unintended romance between a bad boy football player and the assistant to the team’s general manager in 2009. She submitted her work to a writing contest through the Georgia Romance Writers of America and was named a finalist for the Maggie Award for Excellence.
“It was the only contest I had entered,” Solheim said. “Out of that an agent got to look at it, and it ended up [to be] the agent I ended up with — but only because I stalked her for a year.”
After her work was honored as an award finalist, she realized she had to finish the book. Solheim said she was fortunate to get a contract fairly quickly with Berkley Sensation, a division of Penguin Group.
“In some ways it feels like it was too easy,” she said. “I was told so many times that no one sells their first book. And I did, and not only that, they bought two more sight-unseen.”
Solheim was offered a three-book deal for her romance series, which features fictional professional football players and the women who love them. Though the first novel will be released next week, Solheim has already finished book three.
She disciplines herself with a regular writing schedule and knocked out her second and third novels in spans of eight to 10 weeks. The author already has ideas for several future novels. Solheim plans to move on from the series but will likely incorporate sports in some way.
“When I started writing fiction I just always touched on the sports theme,” she said. “I read a lot of sports books growing up. I was, I guess, a tomboy.”
Solheim will sign copies of “Game On” May 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Jackie’s Embroidery at 5172 McGinnis Ferry Road. Local bookseller Read It Again Books will be onsite to sell copies.
