The Johns Creek community will be able to get an up close and personal look into the departments who keep them safe at Community Safety Day Oct. 6.

The fire and police departments from the city are teaming up with Home Depot and Target to provide an environment where citizens can meet officers and firefighters, see safety demonstrations and learn about common safety issues.

“This is an event so we can reach out to the community and they can see what resources they have available to them between police and fire,” said Fire Marshal Chad McGiboney. “We want to do outreach to show them they are safe in the community.”

The event precedes the National Fire Safety Week, and McGiboney said both police and fire will have demonstrations out for the community to see and experience.

Sgt. Debbie Kalish with the police department said they are working on traffic enforcement, radKIDS demonstrations and a SWAT presentation for the day.

This is the second year Johns Creek has had a day focused on community safety like this, and McGiboney said they have worked to make it bigger and better than last year. With a more defined schedule he said they are hoping people will be able to target what they are most interested in.

“Last year it was relatively small and it was a lot of people coming and going,” he said. “This year, Debbie and I decided we should probably get some time frames so people can come throughout the day.”

While moms and dads are getting information about their smoke detectors and having their children’s car seats checked for safety, kids will have plenty of activities to enjoy and learn from.

“We’ll hand out fingerprint kits for the kids,” Kalish said.

The event will be at the Home Depot and Target parking lot at 5950 State Bridge Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 6.
