Kmart is leaving Paulding County after 22 years of operation in Hiram.

The retailer placed a black and yellow banner announcing the closing on the front of its store on Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway this week. It will remain open through the Christmas season before closing its doors in mid-January, said Kmart spokesman Howard Riefs.

Kmart parent company Sears Holdings did not renew the lease on the 75,000-square-foot space in Paulding Commons shopping center, where it has operated since November 1991, Riefs said. Its 53 employees will have the chance to apply for positions at other Kmart and Sears stores, he said.

“The store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.”

The store began a liquidation sale on Oct. 27.

The Shopping Center Group, which recently took over leasing of the center anchored by Academy Sports, stated on its online marketing material that arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby would fill most of the space and become Paulding Commons’ other anchor in 2014. It would be Hobby Lobby’s first Paulding County location.
