I’ve lived in DeKalb County for 30-plus years.
I receive your paper every week and I look through it for local news about people I know. If I want to give myself a slow burn, I read your editorial page. I always wonder to whom in the world you are targeting as your audience, because it sure isn’t me. In a county that went for [President Barack] Obama by 78 percent in the 2012 election, you choose to publish angry old white men who could just have stepped out of 1967.
Look at Bill Lewis’ guest column of Aug. 20. Obama doesn’t want to go to work? Obama can’t make a decision? Obama would rather play golf? Lewis is spewing the same old Fox News talking points, but honestly, I just cannot let this go by without telling you how disgusted I am that you continue to publish right-wing claptrap with absolutely no voice from the other side. Let’s examine some reasons why Obama may not want to go to work. Could it have anything to do with Congress’ refusal to do anything? With Congress’ 9 percent approval rating?
Obama is being sued by Republican congressmen and congresswomen for not enforcing the very law — Obamacare — they have voted more than 50 times to repeal. They want him to enforce a law they hate. After suing him for overstepping his executive authority, they skedaddled out of town with their tails between their legs while the crisis on our southern border continues, because [House Speaker] John Boehner could not get enough votes to pass any kind of immigration bill at all.
So within days of suing Obama for abusing his executive authority, they asked Obama to use his executive authority. They have been demanding Obama do more in Iraq, but they have been silent since the airstrikes started. Last week, Republicans were demanding Obama go to Ferguson, Mo., to address the rioters. Also, Sean Hannity accused Obama of inserting himself into local police matters.
And yes, Lewis, Obama was elected fair and square, and by the way he was born in Hawaii. As far as these “scandals” Lewis refers to, more Americans are insured than ever before and the health care website is working now. Benghazi? That has been debunked time and time again (by the way, how much of our tax money are the Republicans spending on beating dead horses?) The Internal Revenue Service scandal? We’re still waiting for the smoking gun.
As for Lewis’ comments about Malia and Sasha Obama, they make absolutely no sense, but at least he seems willing to “let ‘em grow up in peace” after he drags their names into his opinion piece.
Obama has actually taken less vacation time than most other presidents. One can learn this by using that great invention, Google. Perhaps Lewis’ grandkids need to show him how.
So yes, I can see how Obama wouldn’t want to go to work. He’s forced to work with the worst Congress in history, the right-wing media harangues him relentlessly regardless of what he does, his wife is insulted and the Republicans are talking about impeachment.
Once he’s done being president, I hope he will write a tell-all book and let us know what he really thinks of us.
