“We lost four seniors and those are going to be tough to replace but I started to see some things develop in camp that I am excited about,” Maddox said. “This freshmen group we got in might be the best freshmen group I’ve seen. We got really nice guard play out of them.”
One player who turned heads was incoming freshman Vanessa Blagmon.
“She will be a player to watch next year,” Maddox said. “She’s a really nice point guard. She has nice length and great speed and got nice passing abilities.”
Even though Maddox said he has a good feeling about incoming players and returning talent—Mecca Sneed, Aalyiah Dotson and Zaundra Stevens—his expectations are a little different from last season when Lindsey Reed, Morgan Jones, Nicole Findura and Care’ Bacon were putting on their uniforms for the final time.
“I’ve got young talented players who are ready to step in and that was one thing I was concerned about,” Maddox said. “Who was going to replace that senior leadership that we had last year?
“But it looks like we are going to have a nice group to choose from,” he said. “My expectations will be that this will be a learning season as opposed to last year when we hit the ground running.”
This past season, the Lady Wolfpack earned a 27-3 record en route to a quarterfinals appearance in the Class AAAA playoffs.
As far as the CSU camp, Woodland got a nice dose of competition over five days against Forest Park, Columbia, Decatur, Campbell, Lovejoy, Mt. Zion, South Cobb and Tri-Cities.
“Forest Park has a very good starting five,” Maddox said. “I think they will be a good team to contend with and Decatur really hustled and got after it.”
The week before visiting Clayton State, the Lady Wolfpack participated at Locust Grove’s four-day camp which didn’t have scorekeepers like CSU.
“At Locust Grove, it was just about working on things that you are weak at and progressing,” Maddox said. “So you’re left there just coaching problems that you see and pointing out some things for players to work on.”
Since the Lady Wolfpack are in somewhat of a rebuilding mode, they will not participate in another team camp this summer.
