Currently, the Lady Wolverines have 20 wins and all of them were by a 2-0 margin. Last Saturday, they extended this impressive winning streak with victories over Lee County and Woodland-Henry.
“I think our girls are doing a great job on serve receive,” Union Grove coach Laurie Sponsler said. “They have really consistent serves and we’ve got several different excellent hitters that we can go to. We have enough depth that they all can hit. We don’t have to just go to one hitter all the time.”
This was very evident in the first set against the Lady Wolfpack when senior Jasmine Babbs and junior Kari Brown had some key kills to help the Lady Wolverines secure a 25-21 win.
“Jasmine’s a great team leader and she just can really put the ball away and block,” Sponsler said. “She just does an awesome job. She never lets up.”
In the second set, Babbs continued to make an impact and Treva Hickey made a huge momentum-changing kill down the stretch, leading to the 25-23 triumph.
“Woodland is always good competition and they were again today so my girls are always fired up to try to beat them,” Sponsler said. “It’s a good goal to work for.”
The Lady Wolverines have won the last three matches, including the last six sets, against Woodland-Henry. The two teams will meet again Thursday at Alcovy.
“Woodland has a good defense and they have some players who get the ball up really well,” Sponsler said.
Unfortunately, the Lady Wolfpack also lost to Lee County which ended a 10-game winning streak.
Woodland is 4-0 in Area 4-AAAA competition and Union Grove is 2-3 in Area 4-AAAAA.
