Lenox Square to get 'facelift'; other Buckhead plans move along

At 53 years old, Lenox Square mall in Buckhead is due for a "facelift," General Manager Robin Suggs said Tuesday. Changes throughout the mall will go into effect in time for the holiday season of 2013.

The primary transformation will be at the main entrance of the mall facing Peachtree Road with a new glass facade extending above the mall's roof line, and a roundabout with a central fountain will replace the existing four-way stop to the right side of the valet, to expedite the flow of traffic, according to Suggs.

“There will be better merchant visibility from Peachtree,” sidewalk treatments and enhanced lighting, she said at the Buckhead Community Improvement District's monthly board meeting Tuesday at Tower Place in Buckhead.

Suggs said there also will be changes made to the Neiman Marcus parking lot, or the mall’s “back of house,” to reduce vehicular delivery traffic and a second smaller valet entrance, as well as more display windows, which Suggs said will make it “much more aesthetically pleasing.”

“Through this, I’m hopeful Macy’s will invest some cosmetic improvements on the exterior of their building. It’s fairly dated,” Suggs said.

Additionally, she mentioned possible changes of the existing restaurants and vendors but nothing is set in stone.

“In the back of mall, there will be improvements within the food court,” she said. “It’s fairly claustrophobic with the low ceiling.”

Aside from expanding the space upwards, she said the food court will have an “upgraded, more modern look” with “re-fixturing and re-seating.”

In other news, Phase 2 of the Peachtree Road construction project should be done no later than Thanksgiving, said Brian McHugh, the district's director of transportation and planning.

McHugh said trees are going in Tuesday night in front of Lenox Square, the sidewalk in front of the Ritz-Carlton will “go in starting at the end of this week” and lighting will be complete by mid-October.

Regarding the Piedmont/Habersham roads intersection improvements, McHugh also requested $3,300 from the district, to hire a consultant to give an initial “certified appraisal to do estimates to submit to GDOT to start on a right-of-way phase.” The district voted unanimously to approve his request.

Additionally, district Executive Director Jim Durett requested a $5,000 sponsorship from the district to sponsor the Bucs on the Street Auction Nov. 15. His request was also unanimously approved.

“We will put in a lot more money to construction of the [Greenway] trail but I see that as a down payment on that,” he said.

The Bucs on the Street Auction will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at 3109 Piedmont Estate and Gardens. There will be 19 Bucs auctioned off and all proceeds will go to Livable Buckhead and greenspace projects.

Denise Starling, executive director of the nonprofit Livable Buckhead, said the Greenway Trail design has not been revealed to the public yet because she is waiting on a few last images and graphics.

"We also need clarifications on tree impact and our security cameras approach," Starling said.

But she said the final design will be ready and released in the next few weeks.

She also said Livable Buckhead formed a new partnership with the park group Friends of Mountain Way Common. The park, Mountain Way Common, will be a key destination along the trail.

"We brought them underneath LBI [Livable Buckhead] so we can support their activities. ... It is a great relationship," Starling said. "The park is a major component along the trail where we will have a significant bridge element."

She said the Mountain Way Soiree will be Oct. 6 from 8 p.m. to midnight at Phipps Tower in Buckhead. Tickets are $75 and all proceeds go toward maintaing the park and developing park programming.
