Ben Aspinwall, a fourth-grader at Morris Brandon Elementary School in Buckhead, last month placed third in his age division (7- to 9-year-olds) in The Land’s End Holiday Art Contest.

Ben, 9, the son of Susan and David Aspinwall, of Buckhead, created a collage of a snowboarder for the contest.

“I cut up a piece of paper in the shape of body parts and put them together to make a snowboarder,” he said.

His mother encouraged Ben to enter the contest.

“I just came home one day and my mom told me about the contest,” he said.

More than 1,500 young artists submitted work to the competition.

It consisted of three age groups, with a first-, second- and third-place winner in each category, according to a news release.

Ben, along with 80 other selected artists, will have his collage featured on the Land’s End Facebook page and the company’s website. He also received a $100 gift card to Land’s End.

Ben is well-known around school as a budding artist.

“Oh yeah, I know Ben. He’s a darn good artist,” said Miss Tilley, receptionist for The Hive, the school’s after-school program.

“The first time I saw anything he’d done, he was sketching these fighter planes. I mean they were really good.”

The student’s favorite art is pencil drawing.

“When I drew a boat, that was my favorite drawing,” he said.

When Ben grows up, he said he either wanted to be an artist or an architect. “I like to draw buildings, also,” he said.

Besides creating art, Ben also likes to play with Legos, he said.
