In Buckhead, 5Continents Boutique on Grandview Avenue will celebrate the day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., by donating 10 percent of proceeds to the Drake House in Roswell, a shelter for women and children in crisis.
5Continents is an international boutique with all handmade merchandise from more than 40 countries and 70 artists.
Shop owner Jennifer Saade said it will host lectures by three women who will be talking about topics including the evolution of women in France, lives of women in Nepal, as well as in Syria and Lebanon. During the talks, children can get their faces painted and take painting classes for $10, and $5 will go back to the Drake House.
Plus, cocktails and ethnic foods will be offered after 5 p.m., and guests are welcome to dress in ethnic attire, Saade said.
“Principally, the first thing is to help the Drake House. We’ve been doing fundraising mostly for international organizations,” Saade said. “We really wanted to have local organizations.”
She said the day at the boutique is in honor of Malala, a 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was attacked in her school bus by the Taliban while defending women’s right to study.
Additionally, Ladies International LLC, a Stockbridge-based women’s leadership training company, is hosting its inaugural Elegant Evening of Empowerment at the Biltmore Imperial Ballroom in Midtown on the same night at 6:30.
“Our purpose has always been to empower and inspire women, and to equip women young and old,” said founder Antoinette Dunstan. “This is the first time putting on an event at this scale.”
She said the company hopes to empower women “in one time at one location on the day we are globally celebrating women.”
The evening will include a three-course meal with speakers and discussion on topics including government and business, media and entertainment, and health.
Dunstan said she hopes each woman feels blessed after leaving the night, and walks away with at least one answer in becoming a leader in personal and professional areas of life.
“We hope we have a room packed with women of all ages, all background and experiences,” she said. And Dunstan’s business partner, Widza Robinson, said she hopes women will reflect on their own lives by speaking to women in different fields of work.
“It’s not just being empowered,” she said. “It’s, ‘How can I go out into my world and empower other women?’”
