Henry County runners finished the season in style at the GHSA cross country championships.

Teams from virtually all classifications converged in Carrollton over the weekend to settle the pecking order for the 2012 season — with some area competitors faring well against the state’s elite.

Eagle’s Landing

Eagle’s Landing, which swept Region 4-AAAA titles, continued its impressive streak of having at least one of its teams finish in the top 10 at the state meet as the boys’ squad finished tenth overall in Class 5-A.

“We showed a lot of improvement,” said Eagle’s Landing coach Claud Spinks. “We’re a much better team than we were in August, so that’s definitely a positive.”

The Golden Eagles were paced by junior Brian Cato, who finished the Carrollton course in 17 minutes flat to place sixth.

“I think our boys raced kind of safe, conservatively,” Spinks said. “I think they ran a good race, but probably not with the intensity that we wanted … a couple of them were new to the state meet and probably overcompensated.”

Over on the girls’ side, Eagle’s Landing finished eleventh behind the efforts of Devonna Hill (21 minutes, 55 seconds) and India Milling.

“Our girls raced very hard, but so did many of the other teams,” Spinks noted. “We finished one point out of tenth place, so things were really tight between a lot of the teams.”

Other Notables

Union Grove’s Brandon Cromer finished in the Class 5-A top 25 with a time of 17 minutes, 49 seconds.

Ola’s Erik Roberts placed in the top 50 of that race, recording a time of 18 minutes, 12 seconds.

Dutchtown’s Ashlie Johnson rerecorded a top 25 finish by turning in a time of 21 minutes, 40 seconds. Also in Class 4-A action, Locust Grove’s Rachel Scott came in No. 51 with a time of 22 minutes, 47 seconds.
