In a news release Monday, the Georgia Board of Education announced statewide and school-by-school SAT scores by seniors for the 2011-12 academic year.

The state did not release district-by-district scores. A perfect score is 2400.

The three local high schools’ scores each went down compared to last year’s, but statewide, scores are up seven points.

At North Atlanta, students had an average of 1426, down 13 points from 2010-11. The school had 197 test takers in 2011-12.

North Springs had an average of 1459, a decrease seven points from the previous school year. It had 254 test takers in 2011-12.

Riverwood students had an average score of 1631, down 31 points from 2010-11. The school had 308 students take the test in 2011-12.

Statewide, seniors had an average score of 1452. Nationally, seniors’ scores dropped two points, according to the College Board’s 2012 SAT report. The national average was 1498.

Increases were seen even as the rate of students taking the test increased by one percentage point to 81 percent, compared to the national average test-taking rate of only 31 percent. Georgia has the seventh highest participation rate in the nation. States with higher participation rates typically see lower average scores on the SAT and often see dips when the number of students taking the exam increases.

This year Georgia also saw the largest and most diverse group of graduating seniors in state history. Of the state’s 2012 college-bound seniors who took the SAT, 47 percent were minority students, up from 46 percent in 2011 and 39 percent in 2007.

“I’m extremely pleased that SAT scores increased so much this year,” State School Superintendent John Barge said in a statement. “We jumped ahead of several states in our overall score, even as we saw our participation rate continue to increase.”
