Holy Innocents’ Jason Grimes won the 182-pound weight class at the Area 4A tournament in Commerce last weekend.
Lovett and Holy Innocents’ came away with team championships in Areas 3AA and 4A, respectively, and qualified a large number of wrestlers for the state sectionals at the area traditional tournaments last weekend.

The top four finishers in each weight classes qualified for this weekend’s sectional competition, with the leading eight wrestlers in each class earning a spot at the state tournament in Macon Feb. 14 through 16.

Lovett was victorious at the Area 3AA tournament at Murray County High School in Chatsworth, winning by a convincing 70-point margin over runner-up Calhoun.

The Lions also qualified 12 wrestlers for the Class AA West sectionals at Lamar County High School in Barnesville.

“Having 12 guys qualify for the sectionals is great,” Lovett coach Billy Maldonado said. “It keeps the intensity running high at practice. The traditionals is more about qualifying individual kids, but we’re still maintaining a strong team spirit.”

Corey Erdoes won the 182-pound weight class for the Lions and was named the most outstanding wrestler for the upper weight classes.

Kyler Allen (106), Spencer Lee (138) and William Henagan (220) were the other area champions for Lovett.

James Hite (120), Cooper Ward (126) and William Geraghty (195) qualified for the sectionals with runner-up finishes for the Lions, while Patrick Johnson (113), Lauch Monroe (132), Andrew Johnson (152), Patrick Keough (160) and Darby Henagan (285) placed third.

Westminster placed fourth in the 3AA team standings and qualified five wrestlers for the AA West sectionals.

Alex Balser (106), Davis Houk (152) and Charlie Trense (160) were runners-up in their weight classes for the Wildcats, while Jesse Webb (126) and Brian Krupzack (195) placed third.

Holy Innocents’ won the 4A tournament in Commerce — finishing 40 points ahead of runner-up Athens Christian — and qualified 13 wrestlers to the Class A East sectionals at Montgomery County High School in Mount Vernon in the process.

“We’re still not where we need to be,” Holy Innocents’ coach Stacey Davis said. “We still have a lot to do before [the state tournament in] Macon.”

Brendan Quigley (132), Owen Penn (138), Grant Chastain (152) and Jason Grimes (182) won their weight classes for the Golden Bears.

Other Holy Innocents’ qualifiers were second-place finishers John Hiles (113), Logan Chastain (120), Liam Quigley (145), Rod Davis (170), Grant Gosden (195) and Ben Rousseau (285) and third-place wrestlers Sim Patrick (106), Stephen Williams (160) and Ivano Milo (220).

Ben Barrett (160) was the lone qualifier for the sectionals for North Atlanta at the 6AAAAA tournament in Dunwoody and will move on to the AAAAA West competition at Allatoona High School in Acworth.
