Luella senior Brianna Moore scored 21 points against Mary Persons at Union Grove last Friday.
The Luella Lady Lions scored the first eight points of the game but lost the lead and never regained it in a 48-42 setback to Mary Persons in the opening round of the 2013 Union Grove Holiday Tournament last Friday.

Senior Brianna Moore scored 21 points and pulled down at least 10 rebounds.

“She is pretty good,” Mary Persons coach Kurt Greene said. “I was impressed with her.”

For Mary Persons, junior shooting guard KeKe Calloway netted 22 points, including three 3-pointers, and Asiana Almon added 13 points.

After trailing by single digits for majority of the contest, Luella bridged an 8-0 run (Moore scored six points during the spurt.) between the third and fourth quarter to pull within 35-34 early in the final frame.

But Almon would answer with a 3-pointer to rebuild the Lady Bulldogs’ advantage. From there, the Lady Lions would have just two more chances to tie or take the lead before Mary Persons sank three of its last six free to seal the victory.

“We struggled tonight because we just wouldn’t run our offense,” Greene said. “Sooner or later, we got to run our offense and quit settling for that easy three.”

The Lady Bulldogs shot just 6-of-22 from 3-point range, while attempting 30 shots inside the arc.

“Sometimes, we take the easy way out,” Greene said. “Sometimes it’s easier to pull up and shoot a three at 20, 21 or 23 feet than it would be to run the offense.”

Even though the Lady Lions opened the game on an 8-0 run, all of their baskets came at the foul line. Then when the trips to the charity stripe came to a halt and shots continued not to fall, Calloway started to find her shooting stroke. In a matter of minutes, she had 18 points and Luella was down 25-18 at the break.

“She put us on her back in the first half,” Greene said.
