But a pair of close losses made for a short lived trip for Evan Goff’s team, leaving a ton of motivation for the Hornets as they transition to the individual portion of the season in the coming weeks.
“We didn’t get off to the start that I expected and I was a little disappointed in our early efforts,” said Goff, whose team took on Rockdale County in the opening round of the state meet, eventually losing 33-26. “Nothing went our way all match as we lost four matches in the last seconds.
“I knew our kids would respond from the loss, but we just didn’t quite have enough firepower.”
The loss to Rockdale ushered Roswell to the consolation bracket where the bounced back with a dominant victory over East Coweta, sweeping all 14 matches and posting a 70-0 final score.
The second round of the consolation bracket pitted the Hornets against Brookwood, where they lost 33-30 to the eventual fourth place finishers.
“The guys were prepared; we just came up a little short in those matches in Macon. [Now] we’ll continue to do what we always do and that is work hard. Our lineup could chance as we move kids to the weights that suit them most individually and we’ll try to fix a few mistakes, get everyone healthy and grind towards area, sectionals and state.”
Staying healthy, Goff said, would be the biggest key as the Hornets transition to the Traditional (individual) portion of the schedule, noting that Roswell had only used their full lineup this season in the 5AAAAAA Duals, a tournament they won with ease two weeks ago.
The Hornets will have an opportunity to pull off an area championship sweep Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at the traditional 5AAAAAA meet. Sectional competition will follow a week later with state qualifiers returning to Macon for the Traditional State Tournament Feb. 14-16.
