Shoppers visiting Macy’s at Lenox Square mall in Buckhead through the holiday season will have a chance to give back to children in need — all while having some fun.

The Macy’s Pink Pig ride is up and running through Jan. 5. A portion of the proceeds benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

“The Pink Pig is one of Atlanta’s most cherished traditions,” said Macy’s spokeswoman Melissa Goff. “Throughout the past 50 years, millions of children, their parents and grandparents have started their holiday season with a ride on our iconic Pink Pig train.”

The train, located beneath a 170-foot tent at the department store’s upper-level parking deck, carries riders through a life-sized storybook featuring Priscilla the Pink Pig and her friends.

To date, Macy’s has donated more than $538,000 to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta by way of this attraction, Goff said. Last year’s donations accounted for a 14 percent increase in the overall funds raised, she said.

“We’re very grateful for the funds that [the Pink Pig] raises for Children’s,” said Melisa Morrow, development officer for the healthcare system’s Friends volunteer division. “We are able to offer our patients specialized care and equipment and actually fund research through the funds that are raised through the Pink Pig every year.”

The money raised this year will go toward supporting nursing and wellness efforts, the Marcus Autism Center and Hughes Spalding hospital, she said. Donations will also go toward funding the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit at all three Children’s hospitals — Egleston, Scottish Rite and Hughes Spalding.

Tickets are $3 for one ride, $5.50 for two or $7.50 for three and can be purchased from the kiosk by the mall’s east entrance.

The Pink Pig attraction dates back to the 1950s when it started as a holiday ride for children at the Rich’s department store in downtown Atlanta.

“In 1991, the Pink Pig moved to the Festival of Trees and that’s when [proceeds from the ride] started supporting Children’s,” Morrow said.

In 2003, the ride was relocated to Macy’s at Lenox.
