Lakeside freshman Davis Stockwell
The sky is the limit for Lakeside-DeKalb cross country standout Davis Stockwell.

The freshman concluded a banner year at the GHSA state meet with a top 20 finish among the Class 5-A elite.

Before heading to Carrollton, he picked up the Region 6-AAAAA individual title — recording a time of 16 minutes, 56 seconds — en route to helping the Vikings secure the team championship.

“He was just dominant,” said Lakeside coach Rick Barbe. “He came out of the woods [on the course] and sprinted to the finish line with this huge grin on his face … because he realized he was about to be a region champion.”

Stockwell is the latest in a long line of top flight runners to pace the Vikings’ vaunted program. By all accounts, he’s taking his new status in stride.

This season has been a continuation of a breakout campaign that began last year when Stockwell topped all challengers at the DeKalb County middle school meet.

For all Stockwell’s success to date, Barbe expects his young star to reach even greater heights sooner than later.

“We’re looking forward to three more years of having him around,” said the Vikings coach. “He’s a team leader. We’re young, but he’s really stepped up.

“Davis is really mature … he knows the kind of hard work it takes to be the best.”
