The Tigers senior has earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike with his play and leadership. As an elder statesman of sorts, he is called upon to both lead by example on the field and pull younger players’ coattails to the ins and outs of living up to one’s student-athlete responsibilities on campus as well as in the community.
Hughes has helped lead Stockbridge to an 8-1 record, including last week’s convincing win over Locust Grove.
Before hanging up his prep uniform and cleats, Hughes is looking to help lead his club on a deep postseason run.
Hughes’ contributions to the Tigers’ 2012 campaign warranted his being singled out for “Athlete of the Week” honors, said Stockbridge coach Kevin Whitley.
Hughes will be called upon to do much of the same in the coming weeks, beginning with Friday night’s game against North Clayton. The playoffs beckon after that — giving Whitley and the rest of the players in the Tigers’ 2012 graduating class an opportunity to truly go out in style.
