“George moved from the central midfield, where he was a dominant player, to striker to help our team finish more effectively,” said Lakeside head boys’ soccer coach Ben Smith of Gavrielides. “Our offense ran through George all year and he was instrumental to our success.”
The Vikings’ success in 2013 included a 14-5-2 record this spring, a Region 6AAAAA championship run sparked by a narrow 2-1 victory over Tucker April 19, and a pair of Class AAAAA state playoffs victories over Kell (5-4) and Heritage-Conyers (2-1) before falling to McIntosh in the state quarterfinals last weekend.
Through that stellar campaign as a group Gavrielides led the team in both goals (20) and assists (13), while also bringing a team-first mentality to the pitch every day as the Vikings’ team captain.
“He generally stayed quiet and preferred to lead by example, [but] he had his teammate’s complete respect,” said Smith of his senior leader.
“He was willing to do whatever it took to help the team improve, never stopped working hard on the field and that rubbed off on the other players.”
