On a team littered with veterans and Division-I prospects, it may come as a surprise that one of St. Francis’ most consistent players this season is also their youngest.

Kobi Simmons, a 6-foot-3 point guard and budding college prospect in his own right, is averaging 14 points and four assists as a freshman, while shooting a blistering 56 percent from the field.

Among those not surprised by the talented freshman is St. Francis coach Cabral Huff, who has seen Simmons’ ability rising through the pipeline for years.

“It is pretty much what we at St. Francis expected. He played at this level for our middle school team, has been playing competitive AAU ball and we saw him around our gym for years when his brother played here,” said Huff of Simmons, who plays AAU ball for the nationally renowned Southern Kings and is the younger brother of former Knights’ point guard Jaylen Simmons.

Kobi Simmons, who has already garnered collegiate offers from Auburn and Georgia, has done some of his best work for St. Francis of late; dropping 23 points in a region win over Mount Paran, notching 19 points and eight assists in a win over Fellowship and posting 15 points and 10 assists in a win over Walker.

But in Huff’s eyes, the best from his freshman phenom is yet to come.

“I tell him all the time that he can reach immeasurable heights; his ceiling as a basketball player is unbelievable.”
