Placed in the deciding win-or-go-home match at both the 6AAAAAA Duals and AAAAAA State Duals, Chattahoochee sophomore Sean Hoffman delivered in a big way for the Cougars’ wrestling program.

His win against West Forsyth at area sent Chattahoochee to the state duals for the first time in school history and his major decision against Douglas County gave the Cougars their first win on the state’s biggest stage.

“Two times in one week, the big match fell into his lap,” said Chattahoochee wrestling coach J.J. Hicks. “Those situations rarely happen [in wrestling] and for it to happen twice to one kid is simply amazing.”

In both matches a random draw started the duals off at the 195-pound weight class, and through the first 13 matchups each was closely contested heading into Hoffman’s bout at 182 pounds.

Tied 36-36 against West Forsyth — in the second place match at the area duals — Hoffman won by decision (11-4), giving his team the three points needed for a 39-36 win and a trip to Macon.

A week later, ‘Hooch held a 36-31 lead over Douglas County heading into Hoffman’s deciding match. Just needing to avoid a pin or technical fall, Hoffman sealed the victory with a dominating 12-4 performance, netting the Cougars four points and a 40-31 victory.

“He kept his cool, went out and did his job,” said Hicks.
