Austen Godwin brings a potent overall game to the Riverwood boys’ soccer team’s lineup with his strong defense and scoring.

But more than that, the junior defender/midfielder also provides leadership as the team captain.

A three-year varsity player at Riverwood, Godwin leads a Raider defense that has given up only 1.4 goals a game through their first five contests of the season.

He also has provided some offense as well, contributing a goal in the Raiders’ 7-1 victory over Region 7AAAAA rival Forsyth Central last Tuesday.

But, Riverwood coach Shaun Leyden said Godwin contributes as much with his leadership skills as he does with his multi-faceted playing abilities.

“He’s organized; he’s vocal,” Leyden said. “He leads our defense in the back. He’s one of our best communicators, which is why we gave him the [captain’s] armband. He’s smart on the field. He talks his fellow defenders through it. He’s got speed, he can tackle and he can score goals. He’s a very well-rounded player and he can play any position on the field.”
