Before starting his baseball career at Maryville College next year, senior Bill Woodroof wants to accomplish at least two things with his Strong Rock teammates.

“We’re trying to really make state this year,” Woodroof said. “We missed it by one spot last year and we’re trying to get 20 wins this season.”

Currently, the Patriots are on the right path to that goal with an 8-2 record.

As far as Woodroof, the right-hander was key in Strong Rock capturing its first-ever win against First Presbyterian Day, a 7-2 triumph on Feb. 25.

“Bill has been great,” Strong Rock coach Phil Roberts said. “He’s been one of our top pitchers the last three years, including this year. In big-money games, he is the one who gets the ball.”

“I’m just trying to throw strikes,” Woodroof said. “I don’t have the highest velocity but I just like mixing up my pitches, keeping hitters on their toes. I just try to get them to hit a weak fly ball or weak ground ball and give my defense a chance to make a play.”

Another important facet of the game for Woodroof is composure.

“If you are having a bad game or inning don’t let the other team see that because that will get in your head,” he said. “You have to stay calm out there.”
