With the loss of experienced pitching from last season, senior Bobby Tippett’s versatility has been right on time for the Lakeside Vikings.

“I’m not a big fan of your catcher pitching because it’s such a drain on him physically but this year with our lack of experience, he was really one of the best we had,” Lakeside coach Bill Newsome said. “It has given us a chance to finish where we have. Going 7-3 in the region wouldn’t have been possible without him stepping up.”

Before a rough outing on the mound against Dunwoody a week ago, Tippett had a 9-2 record and a 0.32 ERA.

“We needed more pitching this year,” Tippett said. “I tried it and it’s working out.”

Next season, the North Georgia baseball team won’t need Tippett to catch right away but he could see some time at one of the corner infield or outfield positions.

“I really didn’t want to go to a school in the city,” said Tippett, who also received a scholarship offer from Georgia State. “I like the mountains more than downtown.”
