The senior catcher is among the team’s leading hitters, ranking first in runs batted in (seven) and third in batting average (.375) as of last Friday.
He also provides a solid defensive effort and brings a veteran presence to the lineup, according to coach Lance Oubs.
“He’s been extremely consistent at the plate,” Oubs said. “Not only that, he’s also one of our team captains. He’s a good leader on the field. He handles our pitching staff really well and does a great job behind the plate. He hits in the four-hole for us, so that kind of consistency out of your cleanup hitter is pretty good. He’s a solid player.”
Wells was a key performer for the Lions in their drive to a fifth consecutive state playoff semifinal berth last year.
He also played linebacker and running back for the Lovett football team in the fall, helping lead the Lions to the Class AA quarterfinals in 2012.
