Marist senior Chris McGrath has been handling his business at the plate and on the mound so far this season.

Currently, McGrath, who is a left-handed pitcher and right-handed batter, has an ERA below two and a batting average above .500.

“It’s really special to play an important role in hitting and pitching,” McGrath said. “It’s just been a dream come true. Hitting has helped my pitching and pitching has helped my hitting.”

Partly due to McGrath’s performance and fellow pitchers Sean Guenther and Michael Toner, the War Eagles were 13-0 before a rematch against Redan, the defending Class AAAA champions, this past Monday.

“I used to think it was a bad thing to have so many great pitchers in my grade but now that we’re competing for a state championship, it’s really been a blessing,” McGrath said. “It’s made our team so much better.”

Unless a major league team is serious about drafting McGrath this summer, the 6-foot-3 pitcher will attend Duke next year. Guenther will attend Notre Dame and Toner will head to William and Mary.

“If the right offer comes up in June, I think I’d have a hard time saying no to the pros,” said McGrath, who has a 3.72 grade-point average.

McGrath is a fan of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee.
