The younger brother of former Riverwood standout Bret McDaniel — the Class AAA girls champion in 2008 — he has created his own niche in the sport.
The senior runner capped off an outstanding high school career with a 12th-place finish and a time of 17 minutes, 20.98 seconds in the Class AAAAA boys’ race at the GHSA meet in Carrollton Nov. 10.
It was the third time in four years that McDaniel cracked the top 15 at state, finishing 11th (16:48.79) in 2010 and 15th (16:57.39) in ’09.
“I think Connor had an outstanding performance,” Riverwood assistant cross country coach Isaac Seals said. “He did a good job on a tough course in Carrollton.”
McDaniel state meet outing was the latest of a string of strong showings this season , including a runner-up finish and a personal-best time of 16:17.50 at the Region 7AAAAA meet in Canton Oct. 27 as well second-place results at the Asics Invitational in Whitesburg Oct. 13 (16:37.94) and the Coach Wood Invitational in Gainesville Oct. 20 (16:49.57).
McDaniel is a multi-sport standout at Riverwood, playing a key role on the boys’ basketball and baseball teams as well.
